Lavender Iris Brings Back Memories of Grandma’s Flower Gardens

Lavender Iris Brings Back Memories of Grandma’s Flower Gardens

The iris are blooming! Flowering iris always make me think of my Grandma Steinhauser. She had a wide range of iris, but many were this pale purple or lavender shade. She had them along the sides of driveway, the shed and in her “English” garden.…

Check Your Honeysuckle Vines for Blooms

Check Your Honeysuckle Vines for Blooms

I just love the spring and watching the yard come alive with color! Our honeysuckle vines are now blooming – and look at those beautiful colors! The orange trumpets with yellow centers against the dark green foliage is so eye catching. These blooms will often attract hummingbirds to your garden.

The trumpet honeysuckle produces orange-red flowers in the spring, and then will rebloom again during the summer.

These climbing ornamental vines are easy to grow. They thrive in sun or shade. They do best in well-drained soils, but will tolerate poor soils. They will need pruning in the spring, but they will regrow quickly the next year.

You can train them on a trellis or let the honeysuckle ramble as ground cover. We found this little church birdhouse at a store in Rocheport several years ago and it just seems like the perfect focal point amidst the flowering vines.

Enjoy the spring!

The Mimosa Trees Are Blooming

I forgot to take a picture of our Mimosa Tree when it was in full bloom, but it still looks really pretty! This is a fast growing tree and it is tolerant of our cold Missouri winters. The blooms appear between May and August on…

Plant “Popping” Perennials

Plant “Popping” Perennials

Is it time to add a pop of color to your landscaping? This weekend, we stopped at a greenhouse and I found some gorgeous perennial plants that I decided I needed to add to our yard.

It started when I saw these “Hot and Cold Red Hot Poker” (Pyromania) plants. These will definitely add a little drama to your landscape. Their spiky flowers are are tangerine, orange and cream on a grassy foliage. They should grow up to 30-36 inches. The “False Sunflowers” (Tuscan Gold) added such a pretty shade of yellow and looked so pretty with them.

And of course, it is hard to resist a bright coneflower! These are a mixed strain, with shades of reddish-orange and pinkish red. Coneflowers also come in a variety of heights, this one is a shorter one.

Love these incredible colors! They really brightened up our corner.

These should require a minimum of care and come back each year. Deadheading them will create a longer blooming time.

Always fun to “play in the dirt.” Enjoy being outside and adding beautiful flowers to your yard and garden.

Enjoy Morning Glories!

“Picture This” App

“Picture This” App

How often are you walking through a nursery, park, or neighborhood and thought to yourself – “What is that plant?” The “Picture This” app may just be what you need. You take a photo of the plant and it instantly identifies the plant, gives you information about that plant – including the care requirements, and lets you view a gallery of similar plants.

You can also save the photos you take, send them to a friend, or make a poster with them.

The link to the app is:https://www.picturethisai.com/

At the top is the photo I took, then the app provided a photo of what it identifies the plant as and gives you options of what you want to do next.

Since there are not many flowers blooming yet, I just took a photo of the daffodils I brought it and clicked the poster option.

You can also create posters with your photos – letting you be creative.

The app is free for the first 10 photos. Then if you want to subscribe, the rate is $1.99 a week, $3.99 for a month or $19.99 for a year.

Have fun playing with this. Enjoy!
