Fried Apples – The Ultimate Autumn Comfort Food!

Fried Apples – The Ultimate Autumn Comfort Food!

Autumn is the time for warm, comforting foods and fried apples are the ultimate autumn comfort food! This is another recipe I loved growing up and still love! These are sweet, simple and delicious!

Choose your favorite tart apple to make fried apples. I prefer Granny Smith, Golden Delicious or Jonathan. All of these will be tender when cooked, yet hold their shape.

Wash, then core and slice your apples. I use an apple corer slicer to make it faster, then I usually cut each slice in half. I prefer to leave the peels on, but you can peel the apples, if you prefer.

If you are not going to cook the apples immediately, sprinkle with some lemon juice and stir, to prevent the apples from browning.

Such a simple recipe – you just put everything in one skillet. Start by melting the butter in a cast iron, or heavy bottomed skillet. Add sugars, cinnamon and salt, stir to combine.

Add the apples and fold to cover them with the butter, sugars and spices.

Cover and cook over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender. Watch carefully after about 10 minutes, you do not want the apples to become mushy. The cooking time will depend on the type of apple you use, how ripe they are, the thickness of the slices and the cooking temperature.

Once the apples are tender, remove the cover and raise the heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly. Serve warm! So delicious!

Ingredients

  • 4 large tart apples (such as Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or Jonathan), cored and sliced, either peeled or unpeeled
  • fresh lemon juice, optional
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Wash, core and slice apples. You can peel the apples, I prefer to leave the peel on. I use an apple corer slicer and then cut each slice in half. If the apples are going to sit a bit before you cook them, sprinkle with lemon juice and stir to prevent the apple slices from browning.
  • Melt butter in a cast iron skillet over medium heat.
  • Add sugars, cinnamon and salt. Stir to combine, add apples and stir.
  • Cover and cook over low heat for about 20 minutes or until the apples are tender, stirring frequently. The cooking time will depend on the type of apple used, thickness of apple slices and cooking temperature. You want the apples to be tender and to hold their shape, but not get to soft and mushy.
  • Remove the cover and raise the heat to medium high. Cook, stirring oven for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Ready to eat! Best served warm!

Notes

You can adjust the ingredients to your taste.  If you want less sauce, you can use less butter and reduce the amount of sugars accordingly.  These are also good with a bit of nutmeg added.

Possibly the Best Recipe for Zucchini!

Possibly the Best Recipe for Zucchini!

I have made many zucchini recipes over the years – but I think this one is my all-time favorite! It is like zucchini bread, banana cake and chocolate chunk cookies all combined into one amazing dessert! With zucchini being in abundant supply this time of year, this is the perfect time to try a new recipe.

Even without the frosting this looks delicious! So many flavors – zucchini, banana, honey, cinnamon and chocolate. Your kitchen will smell like a bakery! Like you just lit your favorite fall candle!

Then you add more deliciousness! The powdered sugar frosting has a cream cheese and butter base and then you add a bit of coffee and vanilla. You just have to try to know how good this is!

So moist and flavorful! Plus it is so easy to make!

You could also add a few fall decorations or chocolate sprinkles to make it extra special! Enjoy! Like so many breads, this is even better the second day. I warm it up just about 5-10 seconds in the microwave -makes the perfect snack. Enjoy!
