Autumn is the time for warm, comforting foods and fried apples are the ultimate autumn comfort food! This is another recipe I loved growing up and still love! These are sweet, simple and delicious!
Choose your favorite tart apple to make fried apples. I prefer Granny Smith, Golden Delicious or Jonathan. All of these will be tender when cooked, yet hold their shape.
Wash, then core and slice your apples. I use an apple corer slicer to make it faster, then I usually cut each slice in half. I prefer to leave the peels on, but you can peel the apples, if you prefer.
If you are not going to cook the apples immediately, sprinkle with some lemon juice and stir, to prevent the apples from browning.
Such a simple recipe – you just put everything in one skillet. Start by melting the butter in a cast iron, or heavy bottomed skillet. Add sugars, cinnamon and salt, stir to combine.
Add the apples and fold to cover them with the butter, sugars and spices.
Cover and cook over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender. Watch carefully after about 10 minutes, you do not want the apples to become mushy. The cooking time will depend on the type of apple you use, how ripe they are, the thickness of the slices and the cooking temperature.
Once the apples are tender, remove the cover and raise the heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly. Serve warm! So delicious!
