Are you like me – as soon as we have a few warm spring days, I start looking around to see what I can plant? I love walking through the plant nurseries and the gardening sections of stores – so many lovely plants, gorgeous flowers, and beautiful trees.
One of my most favorite trees that we have ever planted is an Ornamental Weeping Peach Tree. It has the most beautiful deep pink clusters of blossoms. Just look at those beautiful flowers!
The ornamental peach tree was developed specifically for its ornamental attributes- namely its beautiful spring blossoms. They are usually the dwarf variety.
Although their purpose is ornamental, ours has produced some large thumb sized peaches. We did get enough to make a small peach cobbler one year. They are not as tasty as regular peaches, but it was fun to try.
The ornamental peach trees need full sun and well-draining soil. Keep it watered well during the first growing season. Fertilize it twice a year.
The blossoms will fade into a pale shade of pink.
In early spring prune out any dead or broken branches. Prune any low hanging or crossing branches. During the growing season, use insecticide/fungicide according to manufacturer’s instructions to help tree resist pests and diseases.
The tree is just now starting to bloom, but last spring the tree was full of blossoms!
Happy Spring! Enjoy!
