You Can Use Your Cricut To Cut Fabrics for Baby Quilts

Little baby quilts are so adorable! Did you know that you can use a Cricut machine to cut out quilt fabric? And not just quilting fabric – but all kinds of fabric!

If you have the Cricut Maker, it will cut accurate, precise cuts and it can cut very intricate designs.

In order to cut the fabric, you will need to purchase the optional rotary blade. As you can see in the image, it is a mini version of the rotary cutters you use to cut fabrics by hand. The rotary blade can be used to cut out quilting and sewing patterns. It can be paired with the Cricut Washable Fabric Pen to not only cut out patterns but draw all pattern markings eliminating two tedious tasks associated with sewing.

You also need to have the special pink Fabric Grip Mat, the 12 x 24 works best. It is helpful to have two mats, so you can be getting one ready while the other is being cut by the Cricut machine. You will need to cut your quilting fabric into 12 inch or narrower strips before placing on your mats.

The Cricut Design Space has a variety of quilt patterns available that you can download. From there you can read the list of supplies and fabric needed for the quilt you have selected. I found this quilt kit on Ebay, which had the fabric for a quilt pattern that was on the Design Space. With the fabric kit, you could choose any one of four designs.

The completed X’s and O’s – or Hugs and Kisses baby quilt! It was quilted by Mary Kay Lambert in Allendale, MO. She did an amazing job!

Mary Kay completed the quilt by adding the batting and stitching the backing and binding in place.

All ready to snuggle a little baby!

Below is link to another baby quilt that I cut out on the Cricut:

These are two of the projects that I stitched up when we were all staying home last spring. I don’t think you want to use the Cricut to cut out a large quilt, and I am not sure it even saves time for small ones. However, it is very accurate and it was a fun experiment! Nice to learn something new!
