I am so ready for spring! Right now my garden is covered with about three inches of snow, but it’s not too early to start getting ready for spring planting. I have had trouble in the past finding the variety of pepper plants and herbs that I want, so this year I am planting seeds to start my own plants. New experiment for me!
I ordered several varieties from Urban Farmer. It is a fun site to browse for flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs and gardening supplies and tips. I ordered enough to plants for myself and to share extra plants and seeds with others. https://www.ufseeds.com/
I bought some seed starting pots and also used cardboard egg cartons. I used a screwdriver to poke drainage holes in the bottom of the egg cartons. Instead of potting soil, I used seed starter mix. It is softer and lighter so the seeds can get a good start.

making a drainage hole in each with a screwdriver.

I filled each section with mix and then made an indentation with a pencil eraser and placed my seeds in the indention and covered with additional starter mix. I used a turkey baster to water the seeds and keep them moist.

I planted three pepper seeds in each pot, because I read that pepper plants thrive better in a clump of two. When the plants emerge, I will pluck out the weakest seedling. I used craft sticks for seed markers. Maybe before I plant them in the garden I will make some of the really cute ones I have seen on Pinterest.

I also planted basil and parsley seeds. I love fresh herbs and dry any extra that I have to enjoy throughout the year (share drying tips later). I have a large front window on the south side of my home that is an excellent place to keep my new crop, but if it stays cloudy for too many days, I have a grow light bulb that I purchased from Amazon.

I use the light for other house plants when needed. I put in a clamp light so I can place it anywhere.
Right now my project doesn’t look very exciting, but I am hoping to share a new picture with tiny seedlings poking through soon.
