Apron Memories

Apron Memories

My Grandma Steinhauser usually had an apron on when she was at home. Most of my memories of her are when she was wearing an apron, pressed and often with lacy handkerchief in the pocket. If she was baking in the kitchen, working in the garden or gathering eggs, her apron will be tied around her waist.

Aprons are making a come-back – they are cute and practical. I often see them in stores now, especially the vintage or vintage-style aprons. You can find patterns in most stores that carry fabric, in pattern books and even from Amazon. It would be fun to start planning now and make some for Christmas presents. Tomorrow my sister will share photos of aprons that she has made for gifts – you will be inspired!

I found this poem that will bring back memories for many of you to a time when your grandmothers, and maybe moms, wore aprons.

The strings were tied, it was freshly washed, and maybe even pressed.
For Grandma, it was everyday to choose one when she dressed.
The simple apron that it was, you would never think about;
the things she used it for, that made it look worn out.
She may have used it to hold some wildflowers that she’d found.
Or to hide a crying child’s face when a stranger came around.
Imagine all the little tears that were wiped with just that cloth.
Or it became a potholder to serve some chicken broth.
She probably carried kindling to stoke the kitchen fire.
To hold a load of laundry, or to wipe the clothesline wire.
When canning all her vegetables, it was used to wipe her brow.
You never know, she might have used it to shoo flies from the cow.
She might have carried eggs in from the chicken coop outside.
Whatever chore she used it for, she did them all with pride.
When Grandma went to heaven, God said she now could rest.
I’m sure the apron that she chose, was her Sunday best
.

  • Mary Beth, you always share the most beautiful memories of our grandma! I remember the aprons. I don’t wear them all day, but I do when I bake and my granddaughter wears one also.

  • I saw the apron poem online and it made me think of her aprons. I was going to make some for my girls…just hasn’t made it to the top of my list….LOL. Laurie made some for her girls and herself (in today’s blog). We have a 60 degree day today, but tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 30’s. I am going to my daughter Laura’s house today – to start her Christmas decorations. She has a huge window in her loft apartment and we are cutting out snowflakes and hanging them. Should be a fun day! Glad we inherent some creative genes. So nice to hear from you!
