Ingredients
1 cupcinnamon, plus more for dusting
3/4cupapplesauce
2tablespoonsbasic white glue
1 tablespoonground cloves or nutmeg
Instructions
Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Use a spatula to make sure all the cinnamon is absorbed into the applesauce.
Gather the dough with your hands. Knead it several times, pressing the dough firmly into a ball. It will be about the size of a softball.
Sprinkle some cinnamon on a piece of parchment paper, cutting board or other smooth surface. Flatten the ball into a disc with your hands. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough. Turn the dough several times while rolling, adding more cinnamon to prevent sticking.
Applesauce tends to vary in consistency and amount of liquid. If the dough is too sticky, add more cinnamon to rolling surface or roll between two pieces of parchment paper. If the dough is too dry, add a bit of water to the disc and knead into the dough and roll.
Roll the dough about 1/4 inch thick and cut out shapes using your favorite holiday cookie cutters.
Gather up leftover dough after the first cutting, knead it a few times, press it into ball and repeat rolling process. Repeat until the dough is used.
Lay ornaments on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Using a straw, make a hole in the top of each ornament.
Ornaments should be dry in 24-48 hours, turning occasionally so they dry evenly.
String with a piece of kitchen twine or ribbon to hang or use as gift tags.
